Introduction to Smart Grid

This course mainly focus on background and fundamental building blocks of smart grid with stringent emphasis on practical applications in the existing power system network. This course provides overview of smart grid and its potential in different types of power sectors such as power generation, transmission and distribution in Metro, Urban/Semi urban and remote locations of India. This also emphasizes on renewable energy source integration in present grids as well as in micro and nano grids as part of the course and explores its issues in operation, analysis, management, control, protection and monitoring. In addition to it, this further provides detailed utility level analysis in terms of energy management, network analysis and operation of renewable based smart grids.

Instructor bio



Narayana Prasad Padhy is working as a Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Dean of Academic Affairs, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee, Roorkee, India. He received the Ph.D. degree in power systems engineering from Anna University, Chennai, India, in the year 1997. He is the National lead and Principal Investigator  of the HEAPD project under India-UK Smart Energy Grid and Energy Storage research  and D-SIDES under Mission Innovation Smart Grid International Research initiatives supported by DST, Govt. of India. His research interests are power system analysis, optimization, demand side management and smart grid. He has received the Boyscast Fellowship and the Humboldt Experienced research Fellowship during 2005 and 2009, respectively. He is also a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineers (INAE) India and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) UK.



Premalata Jena is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, India. Shereceived the Ph.D. degree in power system protection from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, Kharagpur, India, in 2011. Her research interests include power system relaying and smart grid protection.Dr. Jena is a recipient of the Young Engineer Award, Indian National Academy of Engineering, and POSOCO Power System Award, Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd., India, both in 2013.

Course certificate

  • The course is free to enroll and learn from. But if you want a certificate, you have to register and write the proctored exam conducted by us in person at any of the designated exam centres.
  • The exam is optional for a fee of Rs 1000/- (Rupees one thousand only).
  • Date and Time of Exams: 29 September 2019Morning session 9am to 12 noon; Afternoon Session 2pm to 5pm.
  • Registration url: Announcements will be made when the registration form is open for registrations.
  • The online registration form has to be filled and the certification exam fee needs to be paid. More details will be made available when the exam registration form is published. If there are any changes, it will be mentioned then.
  • Please check the form for more details on the cities where the exams will be held, the conditions you agree to when you fill the form etc.

CRITERIA TO GET A CERTIFICATE
  • Average assignment score = 25% of average of best 6 assignments out of the total 8 assignments given in the course. 
  • Exam score = 75% of the proctored certification exam score out of 100
  • Final score = Average assignment score + Exam score

YOU WILL BE ELIGIBLE FOR A CERTIFICATE ONLY IF AVERAGE ASSIGNMENT SCORE >=10/25 AND EXAM SCORE >= 30/75
  • If one of the 2 criteria is not met, you will not get the certificate even if the Final score >= 40/100.
  • Certificate will have your name, photograph and the score in the final exam with the breakup.It will have the logos of NPTEL and IIT Roorkee. It will be e-verifiable at nptel.ac.in/noc.
  • Only the e-certificate will be made available. Hard copies are being discontinued from July 2019 semester and will not be dispatched
