The course will introduce the learners to basics of digital telephony. It will start with crossbar switch and move to theory of switches. Towards end, packet switching basics will be looked into.

PREREQUISITES:          Preferably should have done Basics of Digital Communications, and Digital Communication Networks.

INDUSTRY SUPPORT:  There is no industry support. The course will be useful to the people from telecom industry.

Course layout

Week 1  : Introduction, Basic signaling, Strowger exchange, crossbar, crossbar operation algorithm.
Week 2  : Call congestion and time congestion; Lee’s approach, Karnaugh’s approach
Week 3  : Strictly Non-blocking networks, Rearrangeably non-blocking networks; Clos Network;  Paull’s matrix; Clos theorem; Strictly non-blocking for f-way multicasting.
Week 4  : Slepian Duguid theorem, its proof; Paull’s theorem; Recursive construction; Crosspoint complexity for rearrangebly and strictly non-blocking networks
Week 5  : Cantor network; proof; Wide-sense non-blocking network – example network and proof.
Week 6  : Packet Switching, Buffering strategies, Input Queued Switch, Output Queued switch
Week 7  : Banyan Networks, Delta Network, Shufflenet as Delta network – proof.
Week 8  : Buffered Banyan network (buffering at each switching element), Computional analysis.

Instructor bio

Prof. Y. N. Singh

IIT Kanpur
I did PhD from IIT Delhi in 1997. I was visiting faculty in University of Roorkee (Now IIT Roorkee) from Jan 1997 to July 1997 in Electronics and Computer Engineering Department, and faculty in Electrical Engineering Department, IIT Kanpur from July 1997 onwards. Currently, I am working as a Professor. I have research interests in Peer to peer networks, optical networks, digital switching systems. I have also been involved in opensource software development, and currently pursuing Brihaspati4 a peer to peer software system for supporting teaching and learning processes.

Course certificate

The course is free to enroll and learn from. But if you want a certificate, you have to register and write the proctored exam conducted by us in person at any of the designated exam centres.
The exam is optional for a fee of Rs 1000/- (Rupees one thousand only).
Date and Time of Exams: 23 October 2021 Morning session 9am to 12 noon; Afternoon Session 2pm to 5pm.
Registration url: Announcements will be made when the registration form is open for registrations.
The online registration form has to be filled and the certification exam fee needs to be paid. More details will be made available when the exam registration form is published. If there are any changes, it will be mentioned then.

CRITERIA TO GET A CERTIFICATE

Average assignment score = 25% of average of best 6 assignments out of the total 8 assignments given in the course.
Exam score = 75% of the proctored certification exam score out of 100

Final score = Average assignment score + Exam score

YOU WILL BE ELIGIBLE FOR A CERTIFICATE ONLY IF AVERAGE ASSIGNMENT SCORE >=10/25 AND EXAM SCORE >= 30/75. If one of the 2 criteria is not met, you will not get the certificate even if the Final score >= 40/100.

Certificate will have your name, photograph and the score in the final exam with the breakup.It will have the logos of NPTEL and IIT Kanpur .It will be e-verifiable at nptel.ac.in/noc.

Only the e-certificate will be made available. Hard copies will not be dispatched.
