CIT-002: Introduction to Information Technology

The basic objective of this course is to make the student aware that we are living in an information age. The course begins with the basics of Information and touches various aspects of Information Systems and information technology. (You may go through the CIT001: Fundamentals of Computer Systems to learn about the technology part viz. computer hardware, software and networking.)

The first block of the course defines the term information and its characteristics, the meaning of ICT and how it resulted in Digital divide and the concept and issues of cyber space and cybercrimes. Block 2 explains the use of Information technology. Three such applications of use of ICT, viz. e-commerce, e-Governance and education have been explained in this block. Block 3 introduces the information systems, their uses, and process of development of information systems. It also explains the definition and purpose of Management Information System (MIS). Block 4 provides an introduction to some important technologies such as embedded systems, human-computer interaction and computer vision.

Instructor bio

Shri. Akshay Kumar

Indira Gandhi National Open University

Mr Akshay Kumar is Associate Professor at School of Computer and Information Sciences (SOCIS), IGNOU, New Delhi from 1st January, 2006. He received his Master of Technology (M.Tech.) (Computer Science) from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi and Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) (Chemical Engg) from the University of Roorkee (now IIT Roorkee). He is faculty in School of Computer and Information Sciences (SOCIS), IGNOU since 1988 and he has over 30 years of research and teaching experience. His main research interests are in the areas of Database Management Systems, Big Data Analytics, Data Warehousing and Data Mining and Data Analysis. He has focused in the last few years on the research issues in Data Analysis and Big Data Analytics.

He was Programme Coordinator for Master of Computer Applications (MCA), Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA), and Advanced Diploma in Information Technology (ADIT) and Certificate in information Technology (CIT) from time to time for one year duration. He was also the programme coordinator of revision of MCA programme in 2004-2006 with Dr V. V, Subrahmanyam; and most recently have initiated the latest revision of MCA programme with Dr Sudhansh Sharma in 2019.  He has been associated with live teleconferencing and phone in radio programmes of IGNOU since their inception. He was resource person / Presenter for More than 30 Interactive Radio Sessions (Phone-In Radio Programmes) held from time to time on Computer Science related topics for MCA/BCA and CIT. He has presented more than 30 Video / Teleconferencing/EDUSAT/video programmes from EMPC Studios for MCA/BCA/BIT/ADIT/ CIT/CIC programmes of SOCIS, IGNOU. He is a resource person for many training programmes, seminars and workshops. He has delivered many invited talks at various Universities and Institutes and also delivered many lectures to M.Phil and PhD students of various schools of IGNOU in the area Data Analysis using SPSS. He is widely involved in course design, courseware development, instructional design, course writing and editing of course materials for various programmes.
